Instructor Profile: Maura Finna

In this series, we’re interviewing our instructors to get a sense for their methods, philosophy on teaching, and more. Read below to learn more about Maura Finna, the founder of Canal Fulton Music and one of our wind instructors!

What first inspired you to start playing music, and how did you develop a preference for wind instruments?

Since I was a small child I have always been drawn to music — like an intrinsic spirit within! The summer before my eighth grade year, my parents finally understood, and I was handed an oboe.

Having little time to catch up to my peers, I practiced — a lot! My mother once “grounded” me from practicing because I had neglected to do my chores!

As I got into band, I decided to start guitar and other woodwind instruments. For my 16th birthday, I bought myself an old upright piano from the neighbors, and began learning that as well.

Do you have a favorite performance memory or musical moment that stands out from your career so far?

All performances and ensemble personnel can differ greatly, as I’ve experienced myself. Playing the “Messiah” each Christmas or Easter was always a joy though, even when I had multiples in one day! And of course my senior recital in college, as a 42-year-old finally finishing her degree, was invigorating, and very satisfying.

What do you love most about teaching, and what’s one thing you hope every student takes away from their lessons with you?

As a young and then adult learner, I remember learning something new at each lesson. New techniques and development of skills applied to my playing were always exciting, and encouraged my path forward. My passion for music grew ever stronger, and as a teacher, I strive to bring this kind of enlightenment to my students.

If you could play or perform with any musician — past or present — who would it be, and why?

I would like to play again with any of my past mentors, and demonstrate their influences on me. Dr. Patricia Grutzmacher and Patricia Kroft are two local mentors who have greatly encouraged me, and on occasion we do have fun playing together.

When you’re not teaching or performing, how do you like to spend your time outside of music?

When I am not playing, practicing, making reeds, or performing, I enjoy time with my children and grandchildren. Additionally, I am an avid organic gardener, and enjoy sharing produce or foods I have made from my garden with others.
