Unsung Voices: The Story of Wendy Carlos

When you think of electronic music today, it’s easy to picture massive festivals, digital production, and futuristic sounds. But long before synthesizers became mainstream, one visionary musician helped bring electronic music into the spotlight: Wendy Carlos.

In honor of Women’s History Month, we’re highlighting a trailblazer whose work forever changed how music is created, heard, and imagined.

Turning Circuits Into Music

In 1968, Wendy Carlos released Switched-On Bach — an album that would revolutionize music.

Using a Moog synthesizer (a massive, complex machine at the time), Carlos reimagined classical compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach. What made this so groundbreaking wasn’t just the sound — it was the idea that a machine could be used as a true musical instrument.

The album became a commercial success, winning multiple Grammy Awards and introducing electronic music to a mainstream audience for the very first time.

Redefining Film Scores

Carlos didn’t stop at albums — she went on to shape the sound of cinema.

She composed iconic electronic scores for films like:

Working with director Stanley Kubrick, Carlos used synthesizers to create eerie, atmospheric soundscapes that added psychological depth to each scene. Her work proved that electronic music could be emotional, cinematic, and deeply expressive.

A Pioneer in More Ways Than One

Beyond her musical achievements, Wendy Carlos is also a significant figure in LGBTQ+ history. She publicly came out as a transgender woman in 1979 — at a time when visibility and understanding were far more limited.

By continuing her career openly, she helped pave the way for greater acceptance and representation in both the music industry and beyond.

Why Her Legacy Matters

Wendy Carlos didn’t just adopt new technology — she helped legitimize it as an art form.

Because of her work:
